Dirt…Rain…Gravel…Who’s Idea Was This?

There’s been a handful of things we’ve learned in the last 3 months while preparing for the tiny home to arrive. Number one on that list would be to NEVER prep your land in the winter! Ha! And in the valley no less…an article came out mid December that said we had more rain in the first nine days of December then we typically get in the whole month of December. Awesome. The second thing we learned real quick…you can’t just order a tiny house and drop it on some land. (Okay, Ken knew that…the rest of us on the farm, not so much.) Water lines had to be dug and extended, drainage, power, and propane all had to be figured out and then we had to “build a road” (which involved moving a section of the chicken coop, aka Alcatraz) for the driver to actually deliver the tiny home. Needless to say, we’ve been busy! The rain hindered a lot of the progress because digging just led to trenches filling with water…so we stalked weather reports, pumped a lot of water out of holes and pivoted more times then we can count in order to try and meet our delivery deadline. Delivery was supposed to be in December, but the folks at Mint Tiny Home and their driver have been incredibly understanding with the weather and stored the home until January for us. So now, we’re looking at delivery in about a week!

For all the challenges that we had (including one dump truck getting momentarily stuck in the mud), the highlight was watching Ken teach the girls how to use a tractor and excavator. And the fact that they loved it, was even cooler to watch! They both clocked in some serious time helping to dig and move the over 60 yards of gravel around the property. Maybe they’ll get to use those skills when we actually get to the house building part of this never ending adventure we’re on, haha!

Some land prep shots…

And now that snow is in the forecast for next week/weekend, I’m sure delivery and set up will be a total breeze. Moral of this week’s story? Don’t get a tiny home in the winter. 😉
